The St. Anthony Hotel – San Antonio

I went on a trip recently to that I wanted to share with you!  My husband and I travel a lot with the kids and try to plan trips for the two of us too.   We travel so much I thought I would share with you some of my favorite places, and hopefully, it will give you an idea of what our experience is and help you decide if you would like to visit as well.

For my birthday my husband wanted to take me somewhere special.  I love historical hotels because of the history and interiors.  I found a beautiful historic hotel in the heart of San Antonio, Texas.   My heart went pitter patter when looking at pictures of  The St. Anthony Luxury Hotel.  I have to tell you, we were not disappointed. This place is GORGEOUS!

We are SPG – Starwood Preferred Guest members.  (This is something I would highly recommend – I will explain in a future post).  SPG hotels have a luxury collection line.  I found out about the luxury collection after staying at the U.S. Grant in San Diego, California.  I felt pampered staying there and wanted a similar experience, and The St. Anthony delivered.

Come Inside The St. Anthony Hotel

Come inside with me, won’t you?

The St. Anthony Historic Hotel

The St. Anthony Hotel has a perfect location, situated downtown across the street from Travis Park and a few blocks from the Alamo and Riverwalk. The hotel was built in 1909 and has quite a history.

Walking into The St. Anthony you are greeted with marble flooring.  Upon check in we were offered a sampling of a dessert offered in the restaurant, and an upgrade to a junior suite to celebrate my birthday.  What a special treat for a birthday present!  Everyone at check-in was very helpful and friendly.

The concierge sat here…

Inside The St. Anthony Historic Luxury Hotel

um yeah, this is gorgeous isn’t it?… with the green and grey mixing to perfection.  The concierge was extremely helpful and guided us to an area we had never heard of… the Pearl District, which I will share in a future post.

The hotel was recently renovated in 2014 and the mix of modern and antique pieces blend the past with present day.  With symmetry and minimalism, this hotel design is perfection.

Walking to the elevator you get the awe of this grand hall.

Peacock Alley

Back in the day this hall, called Peacock Alley, would be filled with famous performers creating music for guests. Imagine women in long formal gowns and men dressed in tuxedos to dance and be entertained.

This beautiful gilt bronze and handcrafted Steinway Grand Piano

boastfully sits in the hall today helping to let one’s mind drift off into what times may have been like in the early 1900’s.

There are eight beautiful crystal chandeliers guiding your eye through the hall.

I had to take a picture standing underneath one of them so you could see the beauty.  Oh and look at the ceiling with the beautiful moldings and corbels.

Throughout the long hall, there are plenty of seating areas to sit and relax.

Luxury Collection and Historic Hotel

I love the symmetry and mix of antique and modern pieces.  Here you see the hex flooring paired with modern elements.

Across from this seating area, you find ornate ormolu vintage chairs

paired with modern seating.

I just had to get a picture in this fun chair…

Oh, and if you look behind me… check out the grand and original fireplace…

The history and original architectural details make my heart skip a beat.  Notice the crest engraved on the fireplace mantel.

Looking back toward the entrance of the hotel, you can see my husband… this shows you how grand this hotel is. With its mass of marble flooring and high ceilings…  aaahhh!  You can also see a table with water and treats.  Located right outside of the elevator, this area was always stocked with treats and beverages.

Presidents, celebrities, and big dreamers stayed in this hotel.

The idea for Southwest Airlines was imagined and drawn up on a napkin here at The St. Anthony.

This story was found in one of the books in the room explaining the history of this historic hotel.  That might explain why across the street at Travis Park Southwest Airlines hosts a movie night in the summers.

I know you are dying to see the accommodations, so let’s head up to the room, should we?

The Junior Suite had a large sitting area with desk, tv, and bar area.

Our view overlooked the pool…

Walking down the hallway there was his and her closets with scrumptious robes inside.

Across from the closets and off of the hallway was a bathroom…

with a sunken tub, walk-in shower, his and her sinks, and television in the mirror.  Look at that mosaic tile on the wall…

Can I just move in???

Next was the bedroom with blackout curtains and an incredibly comfortable bed.

and yet another seating area.

Our room was located right next to the John Wayne Room.  John Wayne would stay in this room when he would visit.  No one was staying in the room at the time so we requested a peek.

Make sure to check back as I will share with you John Wayne’s room, the terrace on top of the hotel and other areas in the hotel which I could not put all in one post.  Are you feeling like you may want to visit?  I want to go back… this was truly a slice of paradise in the heart of Texas!

Are you planning your next vacation?  I would love to hear if you have been to San Antonio or where you are headed on your next adventure.  Are you as giddy about historical hotels as I am?

Definitely, share your thoughts in the comment section,  I enjoy hearing from you!

Until next time…

Enjoy!

Every. Single. Moment.
